"Pembroke" refers to a series of soft red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivars developed by the University of Kentucky.

While it is an agricultural grain crop, it can be grown as "wheatgrass" for pets

The most recent version of this variety, Pembroke 2021, has the following physical characteristics during its growth stages:

Juvenile Stage: It features green coleoptiles (the first leaf sheath to emerge) and exhibits a semi-erect growth habit.

  • Boot Stage (Pre-flowering): The plant turns a dark green color. The flag leaves (top leaves) are semi-erect and slightly twisted with no waxy coating.
  • Mature Plant: It is a semi-dwarf variety, meaning it stays relatively short compared to older wheat types, which provides excellent standability and resistance to "lodging" (falling over).
  • Head/Spike: The spike is erect and tapering. It is described as awnless (or "smooth"), meaning it lacks the long, hair-like bristles (awns) found on many other wheat varieties.
  • Agronomic Traits
  • Maturity: It is an early-maturing variety, heading approximately 8 days earlier than standard check varieties like 'Truman'.
  • Disease Resistance: It was specifically bred for high resistance to Fusarium head blight (scab), as well as powdery mildew and stripe rust.
  • Growth Speed: It begins to grow rapidly in late winter and early spring
